If your switchboard is a black panel there is a high chance it obtains asbestos and replacement is recommended.

If you have porcelain fuses, these are potentially unreliable in protecting your circuit, especially if they have blown in the past. Modern circuit breakers are much more accurate so upgrading is recommended.

A new switchboard is required to have RCD protection, offering occupants a safer electrical environment.

Depending on the age of your home, the wiring may be of an unreliable type. i.e. tough rubber sheath (TRS) is known to perish and has been implicated in causing house fires. TRS is common in homes built in the 1940’s-1960’s.

Pre 1940’s homes may have VIR wiring. Due to the age of this, replacement is recommenced. It can be commonly found in metal conduit or timber cap & casing.

Safety is the number one reason you should replace old wiring (see above question/answer).

Also, if you are looking to sell your house in the future the sale will be more straightforward if the electrical is up to date. The purchaser may not be able to obtain insurance for a house with old wiring.
